Once you have taken a decision to do the PhD. The next big, and the most important question, is from where to get this prestigious qualification. Besides clearing the entrance exam, getting a reliable and a recognized college or university is a gateway to the PhD program.

Selecting the right college and university is very essential because your next minimum two to three will be spending there. In India, UGC (University Grants Commission) is a statutory body that provides recognition to the universities in India and also gives funds to such recognized colleges and universities.  You can also check the website of UGC and they have a list of centre, state level universities, and autonomous colleges. From there you can check the websites of the respective colleges and universities and you can apply to such colleges and universities which provides PhD qualification.

Universities that offer PhD in India

There are universities who provide full time PhD. The examples are University of Delhi and Jawahar Lal Nehru University which are recognized and provide doctorate programs to the students.

Apart from these universities, IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) with branches in selected states in India, NITs (National Institute of Technology) and IISc (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore) are the three good institutes who offer degree courses at doctoral levels.

IITs also make Graduate students eligible into the PhD program.

PhD through distance education

Apart from the universities who offer full time PhD, there are universities who offer PhD through distance education. PhD requires a lot of years of dedication and in case you don’t want to give full time, you can opt from PhD through distance education. Pursuing PhD from distance education will let you do a job and side by side you can also carry forward your education. IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) and Dr. B.R Ambedkar Open University are two such examples of the universities who offer PhD through distance education.

Going abroad for PhD

PhD is one of the highest qualifications in many countries. If you want to go abroad for higher studies and opt for PhD program there, you must check out which universities are offering PhD programs. There are many companies in India which help in providing assistance if someone is interested in doing PhD from abroad. You can also consult various countries’ embassies office in India for that. From there you will also get information about the eligibility criteria of PhD program and also the tests that one has to pass.

Beware of the fake universities

Last, beware of the fake universities. Remember, PhD programs take minimum two to three years in completion. Don’t go for such universities who claim to complete your PhD program in few months.
